Some games are less about strategy and more about combat. Fallout 3 is set in a nuclear wasteland and players get to navigate U.S. monuments in a decaying post-apocalyptic atmosphere. You can approach every situation you find yourself in in a variety of ways, and these decisions will impact how the gameplay unfolds. The world in Fallout 3 may be depressing, but it's highly detailed and expansive. Combat is praised for being varied, rather than just pressing the same buttons over and over. These qualities won Fallout 3 several game of the year awards. It may not be brand new, but it's still a very popular play and replay with PC gamers.

A more recent game of the year is Borderlands, a hybrid between a first person shooter and a traditional role playing game. The game is set on the far off planet of Pandora, and battles with freakish creatures and alien animals are plentiful. The game is well known for its unique style of in-game art, combining animation with hand-drawn aesthetics for a finished product that looks like it could be a live action comic book. As with many top PC games, a sequel has been announced and is expected in 2012.
